Soaring Society of Boulder Proving Grounds

The Soaring Society of Boulder (SSB) has been in continuous operation since 1959 and is run by volunteers.

Based at the municipal airport of Boulder, Colorado we fly in one of the most exciting soaring environments of the world – the Rocky Mountains! Boulder is a thriving college town of 100,000 people just 40 miles north of Denver, and is widely considered one of the best and healthiest places to live in North America.

Our club provides a modern fleet of high-performance club gliders with state-of-the-art instrumentation, tows, training, and a great social environment to our 170+ members and their families.

Our membership ranges in experience from fresh adoptees of the sport, instructors, national champions, to world championship contenders. The “14er Challenge” inspires pilots to fly above all the Colorado Mountain peaks over 14,000 feet tall.

We operate year-round on seven days of the week.  In the summer months, powerful mountain thermals take us routinely towards the edge of Class A airspace, and in the winter, mighty mountain wave powers flights to well over 30,000 feet in our wave window.

Convergent winds often establish long energy lines fueling high-speed soaring flights across the state.  The SSB routinely ranks among the top clubs worldwide in the annual OLC Speed League competition.
